Realistic Title Contenders...

Well Liverpool were 6 games into the season, joint top of the league with Chelsea and all was going well. The match against Manchester City yesterday was always going to be a huge test for us at this point of the season, and realistically if we want to win the title this was a game we had to win. I followed the game on the bbc radio online, we started brightly, Riera was very much involved. After about 10 minutes it all turned on its head, City started to control the game and we were exceptionally poor. City did deserve to go into the break leading with a goal from Stephen Ireland after some woeful Liverpool defending and an excellent freekick from Garrido after a pretty cynical and clumsy challenge by Albert Riera. I turned commentary off at half time as i was absolutely disgusted with the way things were going, 2-0 down against Manchester City, and here we go again with a stuttering title challenge. I decided to follow the game on interactive text instead, and my faith was somewhat restored when the key Fernando Torres pulled one back early into the second half after good work from Arbeloa. I turned the commentary back on, and it seemed that we had come out for the second half like a different side (Mr. Benitez seems to have a knack for half time team talks when we are on the end of a drubbing.) The sending off i don't believe changed the game, as we had already come out fighting in the second half, but clearly it did our cause no harm at all. After seeing the sending off on match of the day 2, Zabaleta absolutely deserved to go for it, it was a shocking tackle, and one that could of quite easily injured Xabi Alonso. We now had full control of the game and were pushing for that equaliser, which we got with just over 15 minutes to go. An excellent corner from Stevie Gerrard and who else to head it in but the outstanding Fernando Torres. At this point we have to go on and win this game surely. We keep pressing and pressing and Torres misses an absolute sitter from about 3 yards which was surely easier to miss than to score. Disaster strikes just before the end of the 90 minutes as the no-nonsense Martin Skrtel twists his knee awkwardly and writhes in agony on the floor, at the time i thought cruciate ligament damage, and this was confirmed this morning, with a scan revealing damage to the PCL, the seriousness of this will be assessed in the next 24 hours but lets hope for his sake it is not as bad as it could be as this injury is one of the worst a modern day footballer can pick up. Its a huge blow for us as Skrtel has been hugely solid and consistent at the start of the season, all we can do is wish him a speedy recovery, and now hope that Daniel Agger is given the chance he so richly deserves. I am a huge fan of Agger, i think hes an exceptionally talented player and i think he deserves the chance he will surely now get. I thought the game might be over after this, and we would settle for the 2-2 with the shock of what had happened to Martin affecting the players, however there was nothing of the sort and the players got the win they so richly deserved, when Kuyt followed up a blocked Torres shot to seal the win and secure one of the best come backs in premier league history. This performance has proved to everyone that we are realistic title contenders, that we are more together as a team than ever before, and that mentally we believe we can do it, and that for us Liverpool fans leads to an exciting season ahead.

"Sometimes You Can't Win, Even When You've Won."

Recount (2008) is Jay Roach's made for tv movie surrounding the 2000 US Election crisis. Having been extremely interested in the situation since being introduced to Douglas Kellner's fabulous book Grand Theft 2000, i eagerly awaited the British airing of this film. Recount is based around that dramatic and confusing time which eventually led to George W. Bush being elected to the oval office. For a movie that is coming from a pro-Democratic position, the film is actually not as biased as one may think. Of course the film was also going to be slighlty left-skewed because it is told from the Democrats perspective, but it shows the lengths that both sides were willing to go to, to win the election. The film is really well put together, focusing on this back and forth battle for the White House. It is excellently cast, Kevin Spacey as always puts in a stellar performance. However it has to be Laura Dern as Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris who steals the show. Of course this is a Hollywood film so fact and fiction were always likely to cross wires, however the facts are certainly not lost here. The film picks up on important facts from the election including the lack of consistent standards across counties for the voting, and also briefly focuses on the people who were not allowed to vote because they had a name that was similar to a convicted criminal. The film brings to light that even in the so-called most Democratic country in the world an election can still be stolen.
